MAHLER SYMPHONY NO. 5

Composed in 1901 and 1902, Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 is a pivotal work both with respect to the composer’s life and creative legacy. Opening with a well-known trumpet call, Mahler’s Fifth is one of his most famous compositions. Composed as a large three-part structure in five movements, the work takes the listener from darkness to triumphant affirmation. Richard Strauss wrote to Mahler about the piece saying, “Your Fifth Symphony again gave me great pleasure in the full rehearsal, a pleasure only slightly dimmed by the little Adagietto. But as this is what pleased the audience the most, you are getting what you deserve.”

HAYDN'S SYMPHONY NO. 86
Franz Joseph Haydn's Symphony No. 86 was composed in 1786 as one of the six "Paris" symphonies written for the Concert de la Loge Olympique. The piece is one of Haydn's most dynamic compositions. It also includes trumpets and drums, a unique feature shared only by one other "Paris" symphony, Symphony No. 87, to lend the work a stately brilliance. Haydn scholar H.C. Robbins Landon calls it "perhaps the greatest of the 'Paris' symphonies: certainly the most majestic in its quick movements, the most profound in its slow."This Philadelphia Orchestra recording of Haydn's Symphony No. 86 was recorded in 1996, and is conducted by Wolfgang Sawallisch.
