ONE FIVE THAT WON

Rossen Milanov

The Philadelphia Orchestra and Christoph Eschenbach have a long and triumphant association with the music of Shostakovich.  In their newest release, they perform the epic and monumental Symphony No. 5, which received rave reviews for the live performances on this recording.

An added bonus of this CD is the song cycle Seven Romances on Poems of Alexander Blok, which has been characterized as having a Mahlerian perspective on life and death.  The cycle features mezzo-soprano Yvonne Naef and members of The Philadelphia Orchestra, accompanied by Christoph Eschenbach on piano.

SHOSTAKOVICH'S FINAL SYMPHONY AND A FAMILIAR QUOTATION

Rossen Milanov

Orchestra Associate Conductor Rossen Milanov conducts Dmitri Shostakovich’s final symphony, a work given its U.S. premiere by The Philadelphia Orchestra in 1972 under the baton of Eugene Ormandy.  A serene and delicate reflection on the composer’s life and times in Soviet Russia, this symphony has puzzled many with its enigmatic use of musical quotations, including a famous passage from Rossini’s William Tell Overture—the exciting trumpet gallop, made famous by the TV Western The Lone Ranger.

A STUNNINGLY SONIC SHOWPIECE FOR ORCHESTRA

Experience the energy and visceral fun of Jennifer Higdon’s Concerto for Orchestra, showcasing The Philadelphia Orchestra’s legendary sound and exceptional artistry. Now, for the first time since its premiere, hear this new American masterpiece performed by the Orchestra for which it was written. Wolfgang Sawallisch leads The Philadelphia Orchestra in this celebrated world premiere performance – his last world premiere as the Orchestra’s music director.

A "colourful, ever-changing intrumental panoply," wrote the Times (London) of the Concerto’s UK premiere, "traditionally rooted yet imbued with integrity, freshness and a desire to entertain."

SHARE THE EMOTION, FEEL THE PASSION, BE MOVED BY THE POWER...

Tchaikovsky’s vibrant and emotionally charged Fourth Symphony resounds with the magnificent beauty of the lush "Philadelphia Sound" in a white-hot interpretation under Music Director Christoph Eschenbach. As an added bonus this CD also includes the final six piano movements ("July"-"December") from Tchaikovsky’s The Seasons with Christoph Eschenbach as pianist.

The Philadelphia Orchestra and Tchaikovsky... a relationship on which a legend was built.
